Getting started with the tracking

The Snoobi tag

Snoobi's analytics is based on a JavaScript tag, which has to be added into the source code of every page belonging to the tracked website. If the site includes several parallel domains or mirror sites, which share the same content, please add these domains to Snoobi's Tracked sites! The tracking does not automatically function on any other domains than the one it was orderd for.

If you know the name of your Snoobi account, you can create the designated tracking-tag from http://web.snoobi.com/en/naytaskripti.php

The tag is as follows:

<!-- BEGIN Snoobi v1.4 -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://eu1.snoobi.com/snoop.php?tili=corporatename_fi">
</script>
<!-- END Snoobi v1.4 -->

in which the corporatename.com –section is being replaced by the name of the Snoobi account. The most reliable way of verifying the name of the account is to look at the order verification e-mail or calling Snoobi's customer service.

Please note that the invoicing begins on the same day that the account receives its first hit OR two weeks after the date or order, regardless whether the tracking has commenced. Therefore it is crucial that the installation can be done swiftly.

Installing the Snoobi tracking tag

Note! We recommed that you give the pages clear Page names in connection to the installation.

The tag should be added onto every page or template, which has any plausible content, right before the </body> tag (see image 1). However, the tracking is also operational on pages which don’t contain the body-tag.

It's worth a double-check to ensure that the tag has been added onto

In order to avoid any unnecessary spelling errors, the preferred way of adding the tag is by using the copy paste –technique.

Image 1. Example of a part of source code, which is suitable for the Snoobi-tag

If the site contains pages that are https encryped, replace the http in those page's tags with https, such as https://eu1.snoobi.com/snoop.php?tili= ...

For dynamic sites (such as php and asp): For pages constructed with a dynamic programming language, the Snoobi tag can usually be installed very quickly by adding it once to a footer or equivalent file.

For sites using frames: Tag must not be installed into the frameset page or frames without any relevant content. The most typical examples of frames, which ought to be left without the tag, are navigational frames (usually including only links) and headline frames. For additional information, read the instructions for frames installation.

Flash-animations: Also Flash sites or presentations can be tracked.

When installing the tag, it is recommended to check whether you would benefit from simplifying URL-addresses with Page names!

Depending upon the website solution, the install can be done

A. Straight into the source code

B. Using a content management system

A. Straight into the source code

1. Obtain access to the website's source code. In order to install the tag, the FTP-details (FTP username and password) or equivalent access to the source code or page template is required.

2. Download the website's files from the server. The source code of the web pages can be modified when the files from the server have been downloaded onto the hard drive of a computer.

If you don't have appropriate programs available, you can install and use, for example, one of these free FTP-programs:

FileZilla                  Leech

3. Before editing, create a back-up copy. When the files have been downloaded into their own folder on your hard drive, it is advisable to make a back-up of that folder to avoid any potential harm.

4. Open all the pages in an HTML editor. Free and easy-to-use software for editing html-files include
NoteTab Lite         NotePad +

Open all pages containing actual content or “text” into the html-editor at the same time, either by dragging and dropping or opening from File.

5. Add the Snoobi tag to all pages. A quick way to add the tag using Find and Replace in NoteTab Lite is described below:

Find what:         </body>^P
Replace with
:     <!-- BEGIN Snoobi v1.4 --><script type="text/javascript" src="http://eu1.snoobi.com/snoop.php?tili=corporatename_com">
</script><!-- END Snoobi v1.4 --></body>^P

Remember to add the </body> -closing tag also into the end of the replacing text and cross the box: All Documents (See image 2.)

Do all the necessary replacements conveniently by pressing Replace All.

Image 2. How to install the tag into the source code by using NoteTab  Lite's Find and replace function.

5. Consider the need for Page names. If the website's URL-addresses are hard to decipher, assign a different &page_name= identifier to each page. Place the page_name identifier at the end of the tag's URL-address. To avoid having to manually insert a different page name on each page, on dynamic pages the identifier can be coded to be fetched into the tag upon running it.

6. Save the altered files. Make sure that the tag seems right and isn't interfering with other tags. Then save all files (Select File and then Save All from top bar.)

7. Move saved files back to the server. When Search and Replace has been done, move the modified HTML –files back onto the server using the FTP program. The files should be placed into the same places or folders from which they were fetched in the first place. In practice the modified files can be dragged back onto the server, often represented by the right frame in the FTP program. Give the program a permission to replace all of the older files with new ones, if this is prompted.

8. Check your website for the tag. Visit the tracked website and make sure that the tracking tag can be found in the source code of each page (access the Source code by choosing View and Source code). Depending upon the server, it might take a while before the modifications are updated. If the tag is correctly installed, the contact person of that account will receive a password by e-mail within 60 minutes of the first visit to the site.

If the site has a redirecting page in operation, check if Snoobi tag has to be added to it.

Here are couple of tips, which allow you to ensure that the tracking has started normally.

Please note! Make sure that the Snoobi tag is re-installed onto the site, when it is modified, updated or new pages have been added! Pages without the tag will be dropped out of the tracking.

If adding the tag becomes problematic, we'll be happy to help with the installation if necessary. In order to do this, we must be provided with the website's FTP login details or equivalent access to the page source or template. You can send the FTP-details (the address of the FTP-server, FTP user name and the FTP password) to  our customer service.

B. Using a content management system

If a content management system is in use, the Snoobi tag can sometimes be installed into the site through it. Essentially this is done by using the same software that is being used to update the site.

However, all content management systems do not allow the source code to be modified through the content management system. If this is the case, the service provider has to be contacted to request they add the tag into the source code. Take the opportunity to also verify what they might charge for adding the tag.

Contact your service provider to gain additional information.

After the installation

Snoobi tracking starts automatically when
a) the Snoobi tag has been added to the website to be tracked and
b) when the first visitor has visited that particular site.

As this happens, the contact person of the account is given the login information necessary to view the report over the internet and administer the information at the Snoobi account. The technical liason person who installed the Snoobi script will not automatically receive a username - he/she may ask for priviledges from the account holder.
