The Snoobi tag and how to start tracking

Snoobi's web analytics is based on a JavaScript tag, which has to be added into the source code of every page that should be included in the tracking results. The tag looks like this:

<!-- BEGIN Snoobi v1.4 -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://eu1.snoobi.com/snoop.php?tili=website_com"></script>
<!-- END Snoobi v1.4 -->

HTTPS encrypted pages
If the tag is placed on pages that are https encrypted, use https also in the tag:

<!-- BEGIN Snoobi v1.4 -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://eu1.snoobi.com/snoop.php?tili=website_com"> </script>
<!-- END Snoobi v1.4 -->

* website_com must be replaced by the name of your Snoobi account! To verify the correct account name, contact Snoobi's customer service or log into "General settings".
If you know the name of your Snoobi account, you can create the designated tracking tag here.

Which pages should the tag be installed on?

The tag should be installed to all the pages that make up a site and share the same content (including mirror sites and parallel domains etc.).

If the tag is installed onto additional domains, which weren't included in the installation instructions or order verification, add the additional domains to the Included domains in Snoobi's settings! The tracking does not automatically function on any other domains than the one it was ordered for.

Pay particular attention that the tag is added to

  • the front page
  • redirecting pages (especially if they precede the front page)
  • various verification and "thank you" page
  • Flash presentations or sites

What is a good location for the tag?

We recommend that the tag should be added onto every page or template, which has any plausible content, right before the closing </body> tag (see image 1). However, the tracking works just as well on pages which don't have a closing body  tag.

If the website contains large amounts of heavy graphics or other files that are slow to load, it's better to place the tag at the beginning of the source code. By placing the tag before large files you can avoid the risk of losing Entry method data; if the visitor clicks on a link before the Snoobi tag has loaded, the tracking data will be incomplete.

In order to avoid any unnecessary spelling errors, please use copy and paste when installing the tag.

How is the tag installed?

A. On static HTML pages »

On regular HTML sites, it's commonplace that the tag is added separately onto each page by the use of a FTP programme. The "Find & Replace" function makes the installation swift and easy, see details from the above link.

B. On dynamic sites (such as php and asp) »

For pages constructed with a dynamic programming language, the Snoobi tag can usually be installed very quickly by adding it once to a footer or to an index file, which is used as the base for all pages.

Consider naming the pages while you're doing the installation!

C. On sites using frames »

Snoobi's tag should be left out from the frameset page and from frames without any relevant content. Typically, the tag should be installed on all other pages except the frameset file, the navigational frames (usually including only links), the headline frames and footer frames. More information is available from the above link.

D. Insite Flash-animations »

Also Flash sites or presentations can be tracked using a snoobi.trackPageView(pathParam) function. In addition, it is also possible to track how much of the animation the visitor views.

Consider naming the pages while you're doing the installation!

F. Through a CMS (Content Managent System)

Sometimes the tag can be installed into the CMS, i.e. through the same interface that is used to update the site. Some common places where the tag can be installed are the page templates or the counter feature.

However, not all CMS systems will allow you to add JavaScipt tags into them, in which case it is best to approach the CMS provider and ask them to add the tag. Take the opportunity to also verify whether the CMS provider or webmaster might charge for adding the tag.

Contact your service provider to gain additional information.

Here are some examples, how Snoobi can be installed onto popular CMS provider:

Tracking e-commerce and web shops

If your website contains a shop feature or a booking system (e.g. hotel, flight or ticket reservation system), it's worth to  additionally install Snoobi's e-commerce tracking script. The e-commerce tracking report enables e-commerce owners to access order data through Snoobi, such as which products have been ordered or which payment option was chosen.

Generally the e-commerce tracking tag is installed onto the order verification page.

After the installation

Note! Please ensure that the Snoobi tag remains installed after page edits, updates or when new pages are created!

Especially if the site is updated through an FTP programme, it is essential that that all updaters use files versions that contain the Snoobi tag as the basis of the updates.

Snoobi tracking starts when:

  • an error-free Snoobi tag has been added to the website (listed in the Included domains) AND
  • when the first visitor has visited any page with the tag

1-120 minutes after this first hit, the contact person of the Snoobi account will receive login information necessary to view the report over the Internet and administer the analytics information. If a technical liaison has  installed the Snoobi script, they will not automatically receive a username and password - he/she may ask for privileges from the account holder.

Installation help

Please contact Snoobi's Helpdesk if you have any questions or problems with the installation!

Snoobi's installation service

If adding the tag becomes problematic, we'll be happy to install the tag on your behalf as long as the website is of a manageable size. In order for us to carry out the installation, you must provide us with the website's FTP login details or other updating privileges so that we may access to the page source or template. You can send the FTP-details (FTP-server address, FTP user name and the FTP password) to our helpdesk.

We do not charge for the installation service.

Please note that the invoicing begins by default on the same day that the account receives its first hit OR two weeks after the date of order, regardless whether the tracking has commenced. Therefore it is crucial that the installation can be done swiftly.
